Murfreesboro ad agency Barker & Christol was in the spotlight at the 2014 American Advertising Awards (The Addys). On Saturday, February 15, the agency walked into War Memorial Auditorium in Nashville as the Addy’s Creative Partner, designing the haunting IlluminADDY theme, but walked out with two trophies of their own.

Barker & Christol received their first Addy for the label design for The Blue Porch Restaurant and Catering’s new hot sauce labels. The winning labels have an updated Americana feeling and use Southern novel style copy to describe the flavors. The winning design was created by Malynda Resh, Art Director, and the copy was written by Lee Rennick, VP Marketing.

Their second award was received for a series of covers for Sanders Manufacturing’s annual catalogue. The set of three off-kilter covers have gained more positive attention from Sander’s clients than ever before. The design was developed by Steve Barker.

“The Addy awards are the advertising industry’s version of the Emmys,” said Steve Barker, Creative Director and partner at Barker & Christol. “It’s a recognition of accomplishment by our peers. We are proud of the work we do for our clients and this recognition is icing on the cake.”

In August 2013 the creative team at Barker & Christol came up with the theme using the Illuminati, a secret society permeating popular culture right now, as inspiration. Since the advertising industry is often seen as operating under a cloak full of dark secrets, the team capitalized on conspiracy theory and developed a 20-page tongue–and-cheek concept book playfully blending advertising and old masonic ritual terminology. The theme was employed throughout every part of the process, from the initial entry-booklet through the stamping of everyone’s palm with the secret insignia as they walked into the event.

“We even asked everyone to wear black and white to the event,” said Art Director Malynda Resh, “and they did!”

“It was a team effort,” added Rennick. “We had help from video production studio Forward that made the invitation video and Michael Korfhage who did the creepy illustrations. And we had friends at the Rutherford Chamber of Commerce, Siegel High School, Center for the Arts and Screen Art donate the use of goods and services to the America Advertising Association – Nashville to make the awards banquet a success. We thank them all.”

The agency’s two award-winning projects also received 2nd and 3rd place as Fan Favorites at the event, The Blue Porch sauce labels losing out of 1st by only one vote.

“The Envy Award is the fan favorite award. Its voted on the night of the event,” says agency partner Brooks Christol. “Its really just for bragging rights, but always fun!”

The three-year-old agency won one Addy award last year for its innovative Christmas Card of recycled headlines. The IlluminAddys campaign will be submitted for consideration of award-worthiness in the 2015 Awards next February.

Barker & Christol, LLC in Murfreesboro, Tenn. is a full service advertising and marketing communications agency lead by industry veterans Steve Barker and J. Brooks Christol.
