The Murfreesboro City Schools are once again seeing growth in excess of four per cent, and a new campus is scheduled to be constructed for the fall of 2014. In fact, the architectural plans are already in place.

School Director Linda Gilbert told WGNS a future school will be built in the western portion of Murfreesboro, although an exact location has not been nailed down. Dr. Gilbert noted that the new school is planned for the Blackman area.

WGNS asked Gary Anderson, Director of Administrative Services for the city schools, if the city is already in negotiations with a landowner for purchasing land…

The Murfreesboro City Council will look at approving the purchase of 25-acres this Thursday evening (2/28/13) during the city council meeting. The meting will be at 7 in the evening in the Murfreesboro City Hall. WGNS' Zach Troutman will be at that meeting. A new school will likely cost over $20-million. A portion of that amount will go towards buying the land. According to the city school board minutes of an October 2012 meeting, the new school will be built for 1,000-students. School board minutes show that the construction will utilize geothermal heating and cooling, if the site permits.

The school in the Blackman area will be the thirthenth city school campus. If the city's growth continues, forecasts call for the need of a fifteenth school within five years. More than likely, that will be in the northern end of the city near State Route 840.
