Murfreesboro Fire & Rescue Department will hold the first annual “Remembrance Ceremony” for fallen firefighters Winfred Vaughn and AC Cartwright on Saturday, March 1 at 1:00 pm.

The ceremony will take place on the northwest side of the public square at the site of the Fallen Firefighters Memorial. MFRD’s national award-winning Honor Guard will perform a traditional bell ringing tribute during the ceremony and Maggi Vaughn, Poet Laureate of Tennessee (and daughter of Winfred Vaughn) will recite a short poem.

Vaughn and Cartwright were killed March 1, 1939 on the way to a grass fire, when the fire truck they were riding on was struck by another vehicle.

“The ceremony will be brief, yet meaningful,” said Fire Chief Cumbey Gaines, “and it will be open to the media and the public.”
