WGNS' Bart Walker asked Mayor McFarland how much waste water is in question?

McFarland referred to the "toilet to tap" water scenario in the soundbyte, which could be a thing of the future.

Earlier this month (May 8, 2015), the New York Times featured an article where toilet to tap water was discussed. The article outlines the idea of literally turning waste water from our commodes into drinking water.

Looking back, in 1990 the city of Los Angeles built a $55-million purification plant that was never used for producing drinking water, as reported by the NY Times. The water is instead used for irrigation because of the outcry by the general public about drinking toilet water.

Drought problems have badly hurt the California area for many years, so now the idea of recycling water is coming back around. LA is once again looking to build a new purification system for toilet to tap water that will actually be used as drinking water by 2024.
