A Murfreesboro Police Officer has been accused of selling a department issued bullet proof vest. Police Sgt. Kyle Evans told WGNS…

“Murfreesboro Police Officer Jason Lowder has been placed on administrative leave with pay and decommissioned pending the outcome of internal and external investigations concerning the unauthorized personal sale of Department property.  Officer Lowder is suspected of selling bullet resistant vests that had been used and returned to the Uniform Supply Office.”  

Officer Lowder was caught when someone called the police to report suspicious activity in the parking lot of Walgreens on Northfield at Memorial Boulevard. The call was in reference to a citizen seeing someone place a “ballistic vest” into the trunk of a car. Police approached the man who was said to be in a Mazda Miata and asked him if he just placed a bullet proof vest in his trunk. His response, “Yes.” The man then told police he bought it from a Murfreesboro Police Officer. Evidently he learned about the vest on a website. The vest was quickly seized and an investigation ensued.

Officer Lowder has been employed with the MPD since 2006.

UPDATE: WGNS confirmed through MPD Chief Glen Chrisman on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014, that the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation inquiry into the alleged selling of a bullet proof vest by Officer Lowder is ongoing.
