Murfreesboro's 2014 Year In Review

The end of 2014 and the beginning of a new year, 2015, affords time to reflect on the City's accomplishments during the past year. The following is a summary list of accomplishments communicated by City Manager Rob Lyons to City leadership during a monthly staff meeting, Friday, December 19, 2014. Lyons will cover this with his "live" appearance on NewsRadio's ACTION LINE radio broadcast this coming Tuesday morning (8:10-9:00AM), December 30, 2014.

  • The City of Murfreesboro received its 3rd consecutive Distinguished Budget Award.
  • TDOT began construction on the Broad & Memorial Interchange.
  • The Murfreesboro Police Department reported a 2 percent drop in crime during 2013.
  • The Murfreesboro Water & Sewer Department received a 97 on its TDEC audit.
  • The City received an upgrade in its bond rating from AA- to AA.
  • Enovate Medical announces expansion, adding 400 new jobs in Murfreesboro.
  • City hosts its first Anime conference bringing 4,500 attendees to Murfreesboro.
  • 22,561 eggs were distributed in Siegel Park for an Easter Egg Hunt.

  • Murfreesboro Water & Sewer Department launches new Customer Information System (CIS) for customer billing.
  • Bloomfield Links Golf Course celebrated grand opening.
  • City Tax & Finance Department remodeled to better serve taxpaying customers.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) agreement approved by City Council that enables MFRD to expand its service level.
  • Murfreesboro 2035 comprehensive plan process begins with a community workshop attended by 200 citizens.
  • MPD Chief Glenn Chrisman receives Joe Casey Award, a top law enforcement honor from the Tennessee Association of Chiefs of Police.
  • TDOT provides additional $670,000 funding for the Middle Tennessee Boulevard improvement project.
  • City launched Mindmixer website as part of Murfreesboro 2035 comprehensive plan to engage the public in decision-making.
  • Overall Creek Elementary, Murfreesboro's newest school opens.
  • City Attorney Susan McGannon recertified as International Municipal Lawyers Association Local Government fellow.
  • Construction begins on new Indoor Tennis Facility at Old Fort Park.
  • Renovation and expansion of Sports*Com begins.
  • M-Tek announces commitment to bring new corporate headquarters to Murfreesboro's Gateway with 250 high-paying jobs.
  • Kendig Keast Collaborate presents Chapter 1 draft of Murfreesboro 2035 comprehensive plan.

2014 has been a good year for the City of Murfreesboro and its citizens. In 2015, the City Council and City management will continue to focus on its four major goals in the New Year:

  1. Safe and livable neighborhoods.
  2. Strong and sustainable financial and economic health.
  3. Excellent services with a focus on customer service.
  4. Engaging our community.
