People welcoming the New Year tonight are urged to celebrate with public and personal safety in mind. The LaVergne Police Department is on of many local law enforcement agencies that will be on the lookout for drunk drivers between 4:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. through January 2.

“We have the funds to work at least three officers on I-24, as well as three additional officers on the state and city streets for the Alcohol Saturation Patrols,” said Police Chief Mike Walker. Walker added that grant money from the state’s Alcohol Saturation Program is being used to fund extra patrols in the city, including I-24.

The LPD is part of the “Crash No More on I-24” along with the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Department, the Tennessee Highway Patrol, and the Murfreesboro and Smyrna police departments. The law enforcement agencies are involved in a joint operation to reduce the number of traffic crashes on I-24.

“Although La Vergne Police Department does not regularly patrol the interstate, we do respond to calls and emergency incidents,” said Walker. “The majority of these calls are traffic crashes that require La Vergne resources. No injury or death is acceptable, and we will do everything possible to ensure the citizens and visitors of La Vergne are safe.”
