Cross Country, No Gas!

Next weekend, Dr. Cliff Ricketts, Middle Tennessee State University professor and 35-year alternative fuels researcher, will begin a coast-to-coast drive using no gas. Ricketts' fuel sources will be solar and hydrogen from water, all produced on the MTSU campus. That is all. No gas. No ethanol. Last year, you may recall, Ricketts and backup driver Terry Young combined to drive the nearly 26-hundred miles from Tybee Island, Georgia, to Long Beach, California, using only 2.15 gallons of gas. Ricketts and Young will be driving a 1994 Toyota Tercel and a 2005 Toyota Prius as the primary vehicles on the journey. A 2007 Prius will be taken as a backup. At least two students are expected to be part of his team, which also will include former students who were involved with alternative-fuel projects through the years. The cross-country expedition will begin Saturday at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean on Tybee Island. Ricketts and his team are scheduled to arrive at the Pacific Coast’s edge in Long Beach on the afternoon of Thursday, March 14.
