Canning Classes May, June and July

Love the flavors of summer fruits? Learn how you can enjoy the fresh taste all year long by making jams, jellies, preserves, marmalades, conserves and butters.

This workshop will cover the basics of boiling water bath-canning to ensure safe preservation. Price includes handouts, taste testing and recipes. Rutherford County Extension Agent Pat Whitaker and volunteer Pam Sites will be leading a series of workshops and demonstrations for people who are interested in learning more about preserving fresh foods they grow at home or purchase.

All classes will be held at the Rutherford County Extension offices located at the Lane Agri-Park; 315 John R. Rice Blvd,, Murfreesboro TN 37129.  to register for any of the classes, please contact Pat Whitaker by email pwhitak1@utk.edu or call 615-898-7710.  Classes tend to fill up quickly, so register early.

Schedule:

Tuesday, May 21 “ Jams, Jellies and Preserves”  10am till noon or 6-8pm (choose one)  $20.00

Preserve the taste of summer, includes recipes & UT Canning Book.

Tuesday, June 18 “ Food Preservation-Pressure Canning”  10am till 12:30 or 6-8:30 pm (choose one)  $20.00

More hands -on than the basics class, you will actually get to preserve some season produce.   

Thursday, July 25 “Fermenting Foods”  10am till 12:30 or 6-8:30 pm (choose one)  $20.00

Learn the basics of pickling and fermenting foods.  Class includes making a small jar of kraut.
