The Second Annual Wine Around the Square (WATS) will be held on September 20th. The event is a progressive wine-tasting, food sampling and music event outdoors around the historic downtown Square in Murfreesboro. WATS is a casual, fun, “hip” evening for all ages.

Guests will check in under the big tent on the south side inner loop of the Square.  Guests are required to show their driver’s license before they receive a keepsake etched WATS wine glass and an official WATS armband.

Komen “Our Mission in Motion” mobile mammography coach and a portion of a nurse navigator’s salary.

Honoree:  Each year, WATS honors women who have had breast cancer.  This year’s Honoree is Dr. Dorothy Murphy, a retired internal medicine physician and breast cancer survivor.

Sponsorships available:  Visit our Web site at winearoundthesquare.org for sponsorship information.  Sponsorships start at $250 to $10,000 and include recognition, tickets and more.

Volunteers: Volunteers will be at each of 16 WATS venues to assist guests, provide information about the wine; pour wine; and offer a water rinse of the wine glasses as visitors leave each space.  Last year, more than 160 volunteers worked on the event to make it an outstanding success.  This year more 265 volunteers are involved.

Event Co-Chairs:  Rita Ash, Anne Davis and Founder, Patty Marschel.  A committee of more than 65 leaders and organizers joins the Co-Chairs in making WATS possible.  Logistics Chairs:  Mary Lovelace and Beverly McPherson; Volunteer Chairs:  Paula Mansfield and Pallie Jones; VIP Chairs:  Deb Thompson and Roy Snipes; Public Relations Chair: Terri Sterling.

History:  The Power of Pink program was begun nine years ago to provide financial support for the Saint Thomas Rutherford Foundation and Saint Thomas Health Mission in Motion mobile mammography, mammograms for indigent women in Rutherford County, and breast cancer education and information. Formerly held as a party in individual homes, in 2012 the event had grown so much that it had to be moved to an outdoor venue and opened to the community.  Thus, Wine Around the Square was born.

More than $120,000 was raised last year in our very first year. More than 600 people attended last year’s event.  The need is great, and more treatment and testing are needed.  We want to grow WATS in order to provide more funding for more breast health care for more Rutherford County women.
