8-New Police Officers in LaVergne

Eight recruits will be officially sworn in as the newest members of the LaVergne Police Department on Friday, August 3 at 2:00 p.m. The ceremony will take place after seven of the new police officers graduate that morning from theTennesseeLawEnforcementTrainingAcademy.

The officers were hired from funds put in place as part of the five-year plan city leaders adopted in early 2011.

“Our new officers have now been formally trained,” said Police Chief Mike Walker.  “Their next step will be field training and then La Vergne will have more officers on the street, where we need the most help.”

Officers being formally sworn-in are:

 

  • Officer Felicia Altheide, attendedPennFosterCollege
  • Officer Justin Darby, attended MTSU and previously worked for the Criminal Court Clerk’s Office
  • Officer John Hughes, attended ITT and is a former Military Police Officer
  • Officer Cody Murphy, MTSU graduate with major in Criminal Justice
  • Officer Larry Ruiz, ITT Tech Associates Degree (Criminal Justice) and previously worked in security at Gaylord Opryland
  • Officer Mareno Smith, attendedTennesseeState University and a former retail manager
  • Officer Kyle Wix, served 15 years in the Army National Guard, Military Police, and has been deployed toIraq
  • Officer Glenn Taylor, 31 years of police experience, was a former sergeant, and served more than 20 years in the U.S. National Guard. Officer Taylor is the only new officer who did not attend the academy due to his extensive police experience.

“We encourage the public to come to the swearing-in ceremony to meet our newest law enforcement officers,” said MayorSenna Mosley. “We began seeing tangible results in crime reduction earlier this year from better defined expectations, planning, and experienced management. It has been wonderful to see how our veteran officers have flourished in the past year and it will be exciting to watch the new recruits grow into their law enforcement positions. I congratulate all of them for a job well done!”
