Monday Night Meeting About Local Tree Planting

There will be a public meeting at 6:00 o'clock this Monday night (10/1/2012) to discuss a tree planting project along Garrison Creek.  It will be at St. Mark’s Methodist Church, 1267 N. Rutherford Boulevard.

The Tennessee Environmental Council is partnering with Middle Tennessee State University’s Stormwater Program and the city of Murfreesboro for a tree-planting along Garrison Creek from 9:00 in the morning until 1:00 in the afternoon on Tuesday, October 16th. Volunteers should park on the outside edge Kroger's at 2050 Lascassas Pike and look for the volunteer signs. They need olunteers to help plant approximately 200 trees along the creek in east Murfreesboro.

The council is coordinating the project and will be donating the trees for planting along the city stream property. MTSU is assisting with local outreach, publicity and recruiting student and community volunteers.

According to the council, the overall goal of the project is to develop a stream protection zone to improve the local water quality.

The plants and trees along the stream will filter out “urban pollutants” (yard chemicals, oils that leak onto pavement, loose dirt, etc.) that flow into the stream when it rains. The trees will also cool the water and provide a canopy that improves the home for fish and other aquatic wildlife.

The tree-planting effort is the second phase of a project that began earlier this year to develop this streamside protection zone.

Volunteers should wear ppropriate clothing and shoes for the weather, gloves, sunscreen, bug spray and shovels. To register on-line, go to http://tectn.org/event/volunteer-day-help-us-plant-trees-in-murfreesboro/ and click on the registration link at the bottom of the page. The council will be providing lunch for volunteers after the planting.
