Community Mourns The Death of Kathryn McCroskey

One of Murfreesboro's most dedicated community leaders passed away around 1:00 o'clock Friday afternoon. Kathryn McCroskey was the unmoving leader who faced political leaders for decades about making improvements on Halls Hill Pike at the Daniel McKee School. She wouldn't budge on this issue, and finally the City of Murfreesboro and Rutherford County entered a joint venture to widen the roadway and install sidewalks.

Why was McCroskey so passionate about this situation? She and other members of the Shiloh Community were able to stand at different points along the roadway and point where more than a dozen neighbors and family members had been hit by speeding motorists on the narrow roadway that had no shoulders. The problem was amplified after school and during summers, when children had to walk on the roadway to get to the school playground.

About Kathryn

Mrs. Kathryn McCroskey was a native of Rutherford County, and the daughter of the late Rev. George and Gracie Wade.  She was educated in the Shiloh School and Holloway High School of Murfreesboro.  Her spiritual background had her involved with different churches as a pianist, on the Mother Board, and Sunday school teacher.

Mrs. McCroskey retired this year from the Boulevard Terrace Nursing Home, where she served over 42 years.  She was the president of the Shiloh Community Club, and her next dream was to get a community club for the area.  In fact, a few months ago--she told WGNS News that "one was in sight."

Kathryn was honored by the Elk’s Lodge for being one of the 100 Special People in Murfreesboro and Middle Tennessee; she received Member of the Year Award for 1991 and 2000 for the Tennessee Healthcare Association of Tennessee as well as the Employee of  the Month at Boulevard Terrace. She was also honored this past July at the Annual Prince Hall Affiliation luncheon of the Order of the Eastern Star. She and her husband Aaron were both honored this past January with the Humanitarian Award given at the Annual NAACP Awards Luncheon.

Kathryn was married to Aaron McCroskey for 53 years. They had four children: Delbert (Linda) Wade, Douglas (LaBora) McCroskey, Aaron Jr. (Deniece) McCroskey and Felicia (George) Wade. They have nine grandchildren: Quiane, D.J., Quinton, Chante, Mia, Carlos, Adrian, Darian and Elijah.

Funeral arrangements for Kathryn McCroskey are incomplete at this time, and will be announced later by the New Generation Funeral Home.
