Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett joins the Rutherford County Election Commission in reminding citizens that September is National Voter Registration Month.  Secretary Hargett is working with county election officials to make eligible voters aware of registration deadlines and requirements, as well as encouraging already registered voters to update their current registration if they have recently changed their address.

“It is important for individuals to register to vote, but it is equally important for voters to verify that their registrations are up to date,” added Rutherford County Administrator of Elections Nicole Lester.  “If you have moved, now is a great time to update your address.”

“We will be conducting state required voter registration drives at all high schools within Rutherford County so that all eligible high school students who are already 18 or will soon be turning 18 can complete a voter registration application and become a registered voter here.  We will be at most of the schools from 11am-1pm on one day during the month.  High school students will need to know their full and correct Social Security number to be eligible to register.  We have about 15 high schools in our county, so we can only go to each school on one day.”  The tentative schedule is on the following page.  For more information, students can ask their principal or guidance counselor.

In a concerted effort to remind eligible voters to register or update their voting information before deadlines pass, the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) has also declared September 24 as National Voter Registration Day.  The goal is to encourage voter participation and increase awareness of state requirements and deadlines for voting.

“The right to vote should never be taken for granted,” said Secretary Hargett, who is also president of NASS.  “I encourage all eligible U.S. citizens to register if they haven’t already.”
