The ninth-ranked Oakland girls are in the region championship game and sectionals for the first time in nine years. They eliminated Smyrna from the postseason 50-39 last (Monday) night. In fact, the Oakland players would have been in elementary school the last time the Lady Patriots played in the substate round back in 2005. The Lady Patriots pounded the ball inside to sophomore Shelby Gibson, who finished the game with 21 points. Smyrna's Treasure Hunt came off the bench to lead her team with 11 points. Twice in the third quarter, Smyrna cut it to a one possession game. But key turnovers and Oakland defensive stops in the final quarter led to their 11 point victory. Oakland will face Blackman for the region title Wednesday night at 7. WGNS pregame coverage begins at 6:45pm. Both teams will be guaranteed a sectional tournament game, with the winner hosting and the loser traveling to the Bradley Central / Cumberland County game winner. Sectional games will be on Saturday. WGNS will have coverage of both games on State Farm Prep Basketball.
