An 18-year old male visiting Murfreesboro from Egypt was struck by a car while walking across Middle Tennessee Boulevard at South Church Street this past Friday night. The victim told police that as he was crossing the street the light turned green and a vehicle struck him. The vehicle, allegedly driven by Gary Lockhart, reportedly fled the scene after the pedestrian was hit. Lockhart was then followed by a witness from the scene of the accident to a hotel on South Church Street.
Police went to the Regal Inn where they made contact with Lockhart who denied driving the car in question. According to the police report, a witness positively identified Lockhart as the driver of the car that struck the pedestrian. The report filed on Friday shows that Lockhart admitted to consuming seven to eight beers earlier in the day. Lockhart was asked to perform a field sobriety test and evidently failed the test. Lockhart was charged with DUI, vehicular assault and leaving the scene of an accident.
The pedestrian was transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville and suffered non-life threatening injuries.
