Perfect JazzFest on Historic Murfreesboro Square

This year's weather for JazzFest is perfect--in the 60s at night and low 70s during the daylight hours. The historic Murfreesboro square is echoing with great music and the smells of memories that take you back to when the fair came to town long ago. It's a feast for the senses!

Local high schools amazed the record breaking crowds Friday night with professional sounds comparable to major top-name concerts. They had the great big jazz band sound of earlier eras, but when you saw them--you wondered how such phenomenal sounds could be coming from young musicians. They were seriously great enough that some entrepreneur should create a New Year's Eve dinner and dance fund raiser at a classy local venue.

The 19th Annual Murfreesboro JazzFest swings into action again at 11:00 o'clock Saturday morning (5/2/2015). Saturday's headliner is Chicago's Reggie Thomas, who once played with Count Basie. Weekend sets also include Music City Swing, Rod McGaha, Rock Williams, Halfbrass, MTSU Jazz Ensemble, MTSU Faculty and Murfreesboro Youth Jazz Orchestra.

And while you're enjoying the great music, take time to roam around the historic square. Visit some of the merchants, enjoy a meal at one of the fine restaurants that make-up the unique business-mix in the historic district. Most rewarding, look for friends you haven't seen for years. I guarantee, JazzFest will become one of the highlights of this year for you.

Come hungry, because the senses will be attacked with the wonderful aroma of carnival food. That always brings memories. Everything from funnel cakes, fresh squeezed orange juice, kettle corn, quesadillas--that's just a tip of the massive menu from vendors along the north and west sides of the historic courthouse. Remember, you must first purchase a ticket from Main Street's tent, as the vendors only accept tickets--no money.

Get a feel for the thinking in the 'Boro. Walk around and hear the blend of ideas as you move from one space to another. Views on political issues that pack the airwaves, questions of why don't we have more people living downtown, ideas about starting the perfect business around the square, or just sharing memories of times that are long gone.

Whatever you do, don't let 2015 JazzFest slip away without you dropping by, and remember to bring your lawn chair. NewsRadio WGNS does a special tip of the hat and THANK YOU to Main Street Murfreesboro/Rutherford County and the Only Downtown Business Alliance for keeping life and fun in our historic district.
