Juanita Thouin, who lives on Saint Andrews Drive in Murfreesboro, has announced her intention to run for the Murfreesboro City Council seat recently vacated by Toby Gilley. On the advice of Murfreesboro City attorney, Susan McGannon, Mayor Shane McFarland announced the vacancy is to be filled by citizen vote during the November 4, 2014 general election.

Thouin, whose name is pronounced Thoo.in, said she decided to run because none of the current council members live on the West side of Interstate 24 and she feels those residents are not adequately represented.

"I believe at least one council member should have to live with the zoning and transportation decisions being made for this area of town," Thouin said.

Thouin, a real estate agent and former business owner, is a fiscal conservative who supports deliberate, moderate growth that keeps pace with transportation and school capacity. She also supports local control of education and strongly opposes Common Core.

Thouin is no stranger to politics. She worked on Fred Thompson's 2008 campaign for president and served as the press liaison in Tennessee for Herman Cain's 2012 presidential bid.

Thouin has been married to Mark Thouin, a manufacturing engineer, for 42 years. They have three children, Jeremy Thouin of Smyrna, Jesse Thouin of Franklin and Liz Williams of Murfreesboro, and 10 grandchildren. She's a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University, a member of the Society of Professional Journalists, a former Bible Study Fellowship Discussion Leader and attends World Outreach Church.
