The Zone Fire Management Officer for the National Park Service has notified Murfreesboro Fire Marshal Carl Peas that prescribed burns will be conducted at Stones River National Battlefield Tuesday, January 12 through Friday, January 15.

According to the "Prescribed Fire Plan," the purpose of this prescribed fire is to help decrease risk of damaging wildfires, and help perpetuate the natural and cultural resource values for which the Stones River National Battlefield was established.

"The goal of the burns is to promote growth of native species, including grasses that stabilize the historic earthen fortifications and dominate fields on the main battlefield and the McFadden Farm site. Fire will also recycle nutrients into the soil and help control invasive plants," said the release.

Officials from the park service say that specially trained wild-land firefighters from the Natchez Trace Parkway and Stones River National Battlefield will manage these prescribed burns.
