Rutherford County Commissioners will make a final push this week to complete the budget process before the start of the next fiscal year July 1st. The budget committee will meet Wednesday to consider a final proposal, which would mean a 19-cent property tax hike for county residents. The full County Commission will meet Friday to consider the budget proposal.

This comes after Murfreesboro Post reporter Sam Stockard reported last week the committee considered a 22-cent tax hike. Rutherford County Schools and the county finance director were able to recalculate anticipated revenue and shave three-cents from the proposed tax hike.

Stockard reports the increase is needed to fund growing schools and population, which is anticipating an enrollment increase of one-point-two percent. That means adding at least 50 new teachers. The total school budget is 326-point-one-million dollars, up six-percent over last year.
