Rutherford Co. School Nutrition

It is national school breakfast week and Rutherford County Schools are celebrating with the “School Breakfast – Go for Gold” campaign. The “Go for Gold” was created by the non-profit School Nutrition Association with support from General Mills Foodservice. This national campaign recognizes National School Breakfast Week, launched in 1989 to raise awareness of the availability of the School Breakfast Program (SBP) to all children and the links between eating a good breakfast, academic achievement and healthy lifestyles. Every school breakfast served in Rutherford County meets federal nutrition standards limiting fat and portion size. Student breakfast’s cost $1.25 per meal.

In other Rutherford County Schools nutrition news, the schools are currently taste-testing several new whole grain, low sodium, and reduced fat items for the Fall 2012 menu. The tasting panel are at a variety of schools, such as a culinary arts class at Blackman High.
