The case involving a Rutherford County School bus driver who was charged last year (2014) with DUI, Leaving the Scene of an Accident and Reckless Endangerment, will move to trial. The 53-year old bus driver was charged with DUI after he finished his bus route. The "pre-trial" date for Jeffery Layne has been set for September 22, 2015. On November 11, 2015, the case will move to trial.

A Murfreesboro Police Report filed in March of 2014 shows that Layne allegedly got into a fender bender with another driver at Chick-Fil-A around 2 P.M. in Murfreesboro. After the accident, the woman told police that Layne continually asked to give her cash and advised her that he was a bus driver. The female told police she then asked Layne, who was in his personal vehicle, to pull to the far side of the Chick-Fil-A parking lot "to get out of traffic" and that was when Layne reportedly left the scene.

Murfreesboro Police determined that Layne drove a school bus for Stewartsboro Elementary School in Smyrna. After transporting children, MPD Officer Zachary Ferrell wrote in a report, "I was informed by phone that Mr. Layne returned to Stewartsboro and that Deputy Grisham had contact with him." The report shows that Layne was then charged with "Driving Under the Influence" after finishing his elementary school bus route. A warrant was later obtained for "Leaving the Scene" of an accident.

Rutherford County Schools spokesperson James Evans confirmed that Layne has not driven a school bus for the county since the date of his arrest. Evans said that he was removed after the incident and not allowed to return.

During pre-trial appearances, lawyers work with the courts to clarify any points of law that should be further addressed or clarified and discuss any underlying facts gathered by police in the case. On November 11, 2015, the case will move to trial. During the trial, the courts will hold a formal examination of evidence before a Rutherford County judge in order to decide guilt or innocence on the charges of DUI, Leaving the Scene of an Accident and Reckless Endangerment that were filed against Layne in 2014.
