Sheriff's Remaining Boiler Hanging-On!

It seems that equipment failure always waits for the beginning of a long holiday weekend. That was the case Friday when one of three boilers blew at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center.

Not long after that Sheriff Robert Arnold reported that a second one of the 15-year old units had also stopped. In an effort to ease the load on the remaining boiler, inmates in the upper floor have been moved to lower floors in the 9-story penal facility. Water and heat in the top floor have been turned off.

The sheriff hopes this will make the remaining unit hold until repair crews arrive after the New Year's holidays. If the third boiler blows, inmates will have to be moved to jails in other counties.

There are approximately 800 inmates at the 940 New Salem Highway facility. Sheriff Arnold estimates repairs could be in the $20,000 to $40,000 range.
