He explains during a routine safety drill Wednesday afternoon, students reported seeing a student with a gun. The SRO's responded and found a 15-year old male student with a loaded 22-caliber handgun.

School Resource Officer Capt. Barry Hendrixson says the student will be taken to the Rutherford County Juvenile Detention Center once the petition is obtained. Other charges may be pending. He faces a hearing later in Rutherford County Juvenile Court.

Six SROs were at the high school conducting safety drills when a student told an SRO another student had a loaded .22-caliber handgun at school.

Hendrixson says they approached the student and got the gun without incident. He says it was handled without any students being injured.

The captain says of the reasons for the safety drills is for situations like the one involving the handgun on campus. This training is done at each county school.
