TBI Says parents stole from their Parent Teacher Organization (PTO)

Special Agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation have obtained indictments for a husband and wife from Hilham, Tennessee, charged with stealing from an Overton County Parent Teacher Organization fund.

At the request of 13th District Attorney General Bryant Dunaway, TBI Special Agents, along with investigators from the Office of the Comptroller of the Treasury, began investigating Tara and Lonnie Scott on September 29, 2014. Tara Scott was the former PTO President at Hilham Elementary School. During the course of the investigation, agents developed information that from August 2012 through February 2014, money went missing from the school's PTO checking account.

On February 2nd, the Overton County Grand Jury returned indictments against Tara Scott, 37, and Lonnie Scott, 36, charging each with one count of Theft over $10,000. Today, Tara Scott was arrested at her home and booked into the Overton County Jail. Lonnie Scott was served in the Clay County Jail, where he is currently being incarcerated on an unrelated theft charge. At the time of this release, each is being held on a $30,000 bond.
