The One Book(s) for Rutherford County

The Rutherford County One Book Committee is busy reading books to select a title for the 2016 program.

Each summer before the One Book selection is announced in fall, the One Book Committee, a group of Read To Succeed volunteers, read a variety of books to narrow down the choices.

The group just finished up activities revolving around Graeme Simsion's "The Rosie Project" this spring, like Book Crossings where free copies of the book could be found.

As anyone who has been a member of a committee can attest, sometimes some great suggestions are nixed because they don't quite fit the criteria. This past year, committee members wanted to pick a fun read that brought attention to a worthy cause and finally decided on "The Rosie Project."

The remaining books are offered by the committee as a Summer Reading List.

Our first suggestion is "The Rosie Effect," Simsion's follow-up to the One Book Choice.

Secondly, we recommend "The Girls of Atomic City: The Untold Story of the Women Who Helped Win World War II" by Denise Kiernan. This nonfiction work profiles the women of Oak Ridge who worked on the Manhattan Project, including one woman who grew up in Eagleville.

Keep in mind that while many of the titles can be enjoyed by all ages, most are geared toward adults, so use discretion when choosing titles for families and younger readers.
