Sheriff's School Resource Officers will raise funds for the Special Olympics bowling tournament while enjoying "good food and fun" during the "Wings and Rings" event Tuesday at the Smyrna Toot's.SROs will visit diners from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and ask for donations to pay for 350 Special Olympians to compete in the bowling tournament in October at Smyrna Bowling Center.

Special Olympics allow intellectually disabled students from Rutherford County and Murfreesboro city schools and adults to compete in athletic events throughout the year. Co-chair John Harris said Special Olympics allow students to compete in the bowling tournament.

Bowling is an event where you don't necessarily have to be a great athlete to do, Harris said. This gives Special Olympians another opportunity to show their skill sets."The only funding we get for athletes to participate in through fund-raisers like Wings and Rings," Harris said. "You can fill up with food and help Special Olympics." Co-chair Lou Paschall said Special Olympians enjoy the bowling tournament.

"For the most part, these individuals don't get to participate in a competitive event and compete with others," Paschall said. She thanked Toot's restaurant and Sheriff Robert Arnold and the SROs for raising money for the bowling tournament General Manager Justin Gilreath of Toot's in Smyrna said the restaurant has always been involved in supporting the community."By having very loyal customers who have been dining at Toot's for many years, we are able to make a great contribution to the Special Olympics athletes," Gilreath said.Sheriff Robert Arnold said students enjoy introducing their parents to the SROs and enjoy spending time with the SROs at "Wings and Rings."

"The money raised at 'Wings and Rings' gives Special Olympians a chance to compete in the bowling tournament," Sheriff Arnold said. "We are happy to support our special athletes."
