Trained school personnel in Tennessee will be allowed to administer insulin under a new law that takes effect on Thursday. State lawmakers overwhelmingly approved the legislation that makes Tennessee one of more than 20 states and the District of Columbia that have passed laws that add insulin to medications school staff may volunteer to be trained to administer, according to the American Diabetes Association.

According to the association, about 208,000 Americans under age 20 are estimated to have diagnosed diabetes.

The insulin legislation is among a number of new laws in Tennessee. Others will change the process for selecting books for public schools, help ex-felons get employment, and increase safety at marinas.
