Tune To WGNS for "Rutherford Ralph" Groundhog Results Monday

Monday is Groundhog's Day, and the big question is "will he or won't he?" While many eyes are on Pennsylvania, NewsRadio WGNS is focusing on rural Rutherford County and following "Ralph" closely.

For the past 30-years, the Good Neighbor Station has used Rutherford Ralph as the key predictor of the duration of winter in these parts.

The granddaddy of them all is Phil, who lives in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Although possibly more famous, data shows that Ralph is no less scientific or less accurate.

As legend has it, if Ralph comes out of his burrow and sees his shadow--he is frightened, turns around and scampers back in. That means we have six more weeks of winter. If the fury rodent does not see his shadow, he stays out as a sign that spring is imminent.

So far the WGNS' Weather Eye forecast calls for Monday to be partly cloudy, and that's perfect for a shadowless day. It's going to be cold, and the temp may peak at only 33. As proof to the folktale, the sunshine pops out the next day and the mercury could soar to 46 in the 'Boro.

MTSU Baseball Groundhog Lunch

In addition to the early morning watch for Ralph, the forty-second traditional Groundhog Day Luncheon will take place Monday (2/2/2015) in Murphy Center at Middle Tennessee State University. This is a fundraiser for the Blue Raider baseball team. Ham hocks, white beans, spring onions, lettuce and tomatoes salad along with chocolate cake and ice cream will help get everyone in the mood for baseball, a great part of spring. The lunch is at 11:30AM and tickets are available at the door for $25.

Season tickets for MTSU baseball will be available at Monday's lunch.
