Information provided by a Rutherford County Sheriff's School Resource Officer identified two juveniles who allegedly poured a substance in a store, causing an 80-year-old man to fall and suffer a head injury, sheriff's supervisors said.

Smyrna Police asked SROs to help identify the two male juveniles accused of pouring the liquid into an aisle at the Smyrna Wal-Mart, causing the man to fall, Sgt. Bob Weeks reported.

"The man suffered a head injury requiring stitches," Sgt. Weeks reported.

Stewarts Creek High School SRO James M. Goney identified from photographs the two juveniles who attend the high school. He notified Smyrna Police detectives who interviewed the suspects. A Smyrna Police detective charged both suspects with criminal trespass and one suspect was charged additionally with reckless endangerment.

SRO Goney was commended for his actions.

Sheriff Robert Arnold said this was a good example of how the SROs work with other agencies in the law enforcement aspect of their jobs.

"Through his identification, SRO Goney helped solve a crime by being aware of the students at the high school," Sheriff Arnold said. "We commend him for helping solve this crime for an innocent victim who suffered needless injuries."
