VERBATIM: As we first reported to you Friday, sheriff's deputies arrested 53-year old Jeffery Layne last Friday after he finished driving bus 110 for Stewartsboro Elementary. He's now been suspended indefinitely by Rutherford County Schools. Layne was charged with DUI of alcohol while transporting about 50 students. Layne, a bus driver since 2013, didn't have a prior record and passed a background check to drive for the school system. As you'll recall, sheriff's deputies were first made aware of Layne's situation after he was involved in a hit and run accident at Chick-Fil-A on Old Fort Parkway. That happened around 2pm Friday. The driver of the other vehicle reported Layne offered her money and asked her to pull out of traffic. That's when the incident report indicates he fled the scene in a GMC Sierra pick-up truck. After tracking him down, Layne was asked to return to Stewartsboro, where he was arrested. For WGNS News, I'm Dan Eidem.
