We have an update on the situation in the Smyrna, TN area that unfolded Thursday night. We are told that three family members remain hospitalized and one was released after suffering blunt force trauma in a domestic disturbance on One Mile Lane near Smyrna, a Rutherford County Sheriff’s supervisor said.

Son Brian Gum, 45, of Smyrna allegedly attacked his father, Dale Gum, 72, of Smyrna, a 13-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl inside the home, said Detective Lt. Britt Reed.

“The boy was able to defend against the attack and able to subdue him,” Lt. Reed said.

Both father and son were treated at StoneCrest Medical Center and later admitted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The girl was admitted to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital. The boy was treated and released from StoneCrest Medical Center in Smyrna.

Sheriff Robert Arnold said this domestic disturbance was tragic.

“It appears the boy stopped the attack and potentially saved the lives of his grandfather and sister,” Sheriff Arnold said.

Criminal Investigation Division detectives worked most of the night analyzing and photographing the crime scene, collecting evidence and talking to the victims, other family members and potential witnesses.

The investigation remains open.
