An online WGNS listener in Egypt says he has an idea of how to prevent stolen manhole covers in Murfreesboro. Aly Dawoud told us he manufactures a composite material manhole cover that thieves don’t want. The manhole covers stolen in Rutherford County are being stolen and sold to scrap metal yards because of their metal weight and value. Dawoud told us with his manhole covers, “There is no recycle value (relative to metal), thus no motive for thievery.”  The online listener also told WGNS that open manholes present a dangerous problem to motorist and pedestrians.

Dawoud said his manhole covers are strong and stay in place under any load, “The product is capable of accepting loads over 40 tons without breakage, accumulated stress or permanent deflection.” WGNS has forwarded his information to the City of Murfreesboro.
