As the colder months near, are you using legal antifreeze for your vehicle or are you using antifreeze that has been sitting on your garage shelf since 2010? In 2008, the Tennessee General Assembly enacted a new hazardous substance legislation known as the “Haley Ham Law.” The law requires that any engine coolant sold in Tennessee after January 1st 2010 to contain a bittering agent. The bitter flavoring will hopefully prevent the unintentional poisoning of people and pets. It is not illegal to posses the old antifreeze, only illegal to sell it.
The law was named after 11-year old Haley Ham from Sevierville, Tennessee. Ham’s dog was intentionally poisoned with antifreeze in 2007.
