The event is part of the Special Olympics fund-raiser to allow about 200 mentally handicapped students to participate in the annual Special Olympics Bowling Tournament Oct. 18 at Smyrna Bowling Lanes.

Special Olympics co-coordinator Lou Paschall said she hopes diners will leave contributions in the envelopes on the tables. All proceeds go to special athletes from Rutherford County and Murfreesboro schools and some independent athletes.

“This is a school-based community,” Paschall said. “It’s important for our community to support these athletes to cheer them on. We’re very grateful to Sheriff Robert Arnold and his office for their participation.”

Funds will pay for transporting about 200 athletes from schools to the bowling lanes, the games, shoes and ribbons.

In support of the event, General Manager Rachel Hunter of Toot’s in Smyrna said the restaurant will serve a wings and onion rings special for $5.99 during the event.

“We have a couple of servers with children with special needs so that makes it more dearer to our hearts,” Hunter said. “They are single moms. We want to show them we support them. I think it’s a privilege.”

Servers love the community event and are “begging to work,” the manager said.

“Here in Smyrna , without the community, we wouldn’t be anything,” Hunter said. “We love doing things like this to make Toot’s motto of ‘good food and fun’ even more ‘good food and fun.’”
