VERBATIM:

"There is an energy among the students that is evident in their playing," says Conductor Brian Russell. "Not only are they performing sophisticated literature by some of the finest composers in music history, but they are doing so with precision, vigor, and power. I share in the community's pride of these students and look forward to building on the Orchestra's rich musical history."

The concert will be held at 7pm in the Hinton Hall of the Wright Music Building on the MTSU campus. The Murfreesboro Youth Jazz Orchestra and Preparatory Strings Orchestra will join the Murfreesboro Youth Orchestra for the 60-minute program, which will include a march by Strauss, a study piece by American composer Aaron Copland, a French opera overture by Meyerbeer, and Haydn's Symphony 104. Dr. David Loucky, Professor of Music at the MTSU School of Music and Dr. Russell's former teacher, will also perform a trombone solo.

Only the third conductor in the group's history, Dr. Brian T. Russell brings with him experience teaching music at the University level in New York and Illinois in addition to teaching at four high schools in Tennessee. The Nashville native took the reins of the Orchestra in August and he is excited to lead his first concert with the ensemble.

"We are thrilled to have Dr. Russell work with these students," said Edie Pope, Board president of the MYO. "He brings with him an impressive education from the renowned Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY as well as experience leading academic and professional ensembles to much success. This concert represents the first of many fine concerts under his baton for years to come."

Dr. Russell currently also serves as the Chair of Fine Arts at Stewarts Creek High School in Smyrna and lives with his three children and wife, newly-hired MYO Executive Director Patience Long, in Murfreesboro.

Tickets to the concert are $10 for General Admission and $5 for students. Tickets will be sold at the door or can be purchased through www.MYOrchestra.org.
