The Colonel Hardy Murfree Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) will be handing out flags Monday evening (7/4/11) during the "Celebration Under The Stars" at McKnight Park. The Murfreesboro Symphony performs patriotic favorites at 8:00 o'clock Monday night with a fireworks display set to music at 9:00.
This year's annual DAR flag give away is headed by a mother-daughter-granddaughters team. Special thanks to Joanne Venable, her daughter Grace James, and Grace's two little daughters. DAR Andrea Calfee and her husband John, HODAR, will personally place 1,000 flags in the hands of those gathered to celebration our nation's Independence Day!
John Hood, who continues to be a supporter of Colonel Hardy Murfree Chapter, will serve as the emcee of this annual event that is sponsored by the Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation Department.

This is one of many activities of the Colonel Hardy Murfree DAR Chapter that creates a strong patriotic feeling and respect for Old Glory.
Andrea Calfee said, "Our objective is to keep the flag flying, to protect it continuously under all conditions, and to educate citizens regarding its correct use.  This committee has great opportunities for community activity and service."

She continued, "The DAR purchased the flags from Fayne Haynes.  I have toured his World War II museum at his flag store on Lytle Street. Veterans like him and their incredible stories of valor and grit are fast disappearing from the scene."
She noted that the local DAR chapter is preparing the program schedule for the coming year, Mr. Haynes and other local World War II veterans will be the luncheon guests at their October 13th meeting.  Calfee concluded, "Sadly, we won't be able to let them speak at length during the program, but we would like to present each with a certificate recognizing their achievements and showing our appreciation for their service."
