Two 14-year-olds were charged Thursday with stealing about $3,000 worth of property from Sumner County band students during a football game last Friday at Oakland High School, a school resource officer said.

The juveniles were accused of breaking into the unlocked Sumner County Schools bus and stealing iPods, cash and jewelry, said arresting Oakland SRO David Crim. They were charged with felony auto burglary. Detective Troy Hooker assisted in the investigation.

After learning of the burglary, the school staff offered a reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspects. Crim gathered information leading to the arrest.

One iPod Nano was recovered but the remainder of the stolen property was sold since Friday, the SRO said.

“It’s a very unfortunate incident,” Crim said. “Oakland High School and its staff came together and worked hard to solve the case. They were very concerned about what happened.”

Crim also urged people to help prevent burglaries and thefts by keeping up with their own personal items and cash.

The suspects were being held at the Rutherford County Juvenile Detention Center while awaiting a hearing Friday in Juvenile Court.
