Murfreesboro's 200th Celebration Nearing

Less than four weeks away, the celebration in Murfreesboro will begin Oct. 17, the day 200 years ago that the Tennessee Legislature agreed Rutherford County needed its county seat near the union of Lytle and Town creeks. Named Murfreesborough the following month (spelled with a b-o-r-o-u-g-h), the hamlet was chartered as Murfreesboro (with what it is today b-o-r-o) early the next year.

Each month, beginning this October, has a special theme. Beginning at 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 17, a Monday, Mayor Tommy Bragg will officially open the year-long, citywide birthday celebration on the Civic Plaza adjacent to City Hall. Downtown bells will ring and music and food will be available to mark the beginning of the year-long celebration. Especially featured will be a birthday cake designed by TLC Channel’s Jay Qualls. Everyone is invited to attend the special event.
