State lawmakers have announced they will research if Tennessee should legalize marijuana.

Lieutenant Governor Randy McNally and State House Speaker Beth Harwell wrote a letter announcing their decision to form an ad-hoc committee to consider the issue.

The committee will study, evaluate, analyze and undertake a comprehensive review to determine if medical marijuana is in the best interest of the state.

Ten lawmakers will serve on the committee.

Earlier this year in Tennessee, Republican Rep. Jeremy Faison said there's currently not enough support in the Senate to at least allow for medical marijuana.

Faison's bill would have let people use prescribed marijuana to treat a variety of ailments, from cancer to post-traumatic stress disorder. It also would have allowed 50 grow operations in Tennessee, with the first 15 in distressed areas.
