(MURFREESBORO)  The live Christmas tree on the historic Rutherford County Courthouse lawn will be lit for the first time tonight during a virtual downtown tree lighting ceremony.

Main Street Murfreesboro has partnered with Rutherford County, the City of Murfreesboro, and local sponsors to produce an hour of dazzling pre-programming leading up the tree lighting finale.

You can watch the event beginning at 6:30 p.m. on CityTV, RCTV, Roku, AppleTV, Amazon Fire, YouTube or Facebook. Both the city and county will be airing on their channels and social platforms.

City of Murfreesboro’s Michael Linn White and Larry Flowers take viewers through a wonderful collection of songs from local churches and Rutherford County high school students, dance numbers from The Dancer’s School, a Center for the Arts drama, Christmas story-telling with City Council members and County Commissioners, and many other surprises, including celebrity guest appearances.

Ruthie the Elf maintains constant contact with Santa waiting for his arrival to the public square. Ruthie, Santa and Mrs. Clause, Rutherford County Mayor Bill Ketron and wife Teresa, along with Carly Beam, daughter of Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce’s Vice President of Membership Development Kelli Beam, will flip the big switch at the end of the show, followed by a virtual community choir singing the Christmas favorite, “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.”

Patience Long with the Center for the Arts told WGNS...

The Murfreesboro Center for the Arts will be a part of tonight's "virtual" tree lighting. The event will feature a 6-minute version of A Christmas Carol during the virtual lighting of the Christmas Tree...

Again, this major "virtual event" features Santa Claus at the Christmas tree lighting on the historic square. The entire ceremony will be 45-minutes long and it begins at 6:30PM.

This will also be a great opportunity to shop the downtown merchants and take advantage of the hometown Christmas feeling that's a part of the historic downtown Murfreesboro square. Oh--do that "in person"; don't shop "virtually".
