(UPDATE - MURFREESBORO) Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) Special Agents continue to investigate the circumstances leading to an officer-involved shooting Sunday (6/6/2021) morning in Murfreesboro.

Shortly after 5 a.m. on Sunday, two Murfreesboro officers were approached by a man in a vehicle who displayed a handgun.  A brief pursuit ensued, which ended in the grassy field to the left of the Rutherford County Correctional Work Center (near West Rutherford Boulevard and Southpointe Way).

Once in the area of the field, MPD Officers talked with the man, who continually displayed a handgun. The officers spoke with the subject for more than half an hour and utilized less-lethal means before an escalation occurred, which was when an officer fired his service weapon.  The man sustained a gunshot injury and was transported to a local hospital to be treated.  No officers were hurt during the incident.

TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, as well as gather any and all relevant interviews and evidence.  Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for his further review and consideration.  The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether the actions of an officer were justified in these types of matters.  That decision rests with the District Attorney General requesting TBI’s involvement.

As of Monday (6/7/2021) morning, names have not been released.
