UPDATE: More Details on the Highway 99 Road Widening Project

Highway 99 in Murfreesboro first opened to traffic in 1931 under the state road system. Today, the road is heavily traveled as motorist head to businesses and residential areas along the route to Rockvale and Eagleville.

Several years ago, the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) started the process of widening the road to include five lanes of traffic that include a dedicated turn lane in the center. Once fully complete, the road will have 12-foot shoulders with curbs and sidewalks.

The current section of Highway 99 that is under construction sits between I-24 and Cason Lane. Crews have been working to widen that section of roadway for over two years and TDOT is scheduled to have it completed by late August or early September.

Once the current section of Highway 99 is finished, the state will turn their focus a little further down the road between Cason Lane and Veterans Parkway. There, TDOT will oversee the widening of the highway, just as they have between I-24 and Cason Lane.

As part of the current widening project, the contractor for TDOT will be closing the northside of Cason Lane at Highway 99 (New Salem Hwy) for the installation of underground utility lines. The road closure at Cason Lane and 99 will be between June 21st through July 23rd.

Motorists can use the detour route that was released by the City of Murfreesboro to navigate around the closed intersection. That detour will take drivers down St Andrews Drive to Cason Trail and then onto Highway 99 by way of River Rock Blvd.

Breakdown of Details:

When the Highway 99 project is fully complete, the roadway will be widened from two-lanes to five-lanes between Highway 96, over I-24 and all the way to Veterans Parkway. This project allows for a dedicated turn lane in the center. The total area to be widened covers approximately 7-miles of roadway.
