Two multi-vehicle accident occurred on I-24 around 1:45 Friday morning. The wrecks happened at the 68-mile marker, below the Rock Springs Road overpass in Smyrna.
Lt. Charlie Caplinger with the Tennessee Highway Patrol told WGNS, “The early reports are showing that one of the vehicles may have had a mechanical issue and became stranded in the lanes of travel on I-24 - when another vehicle struck the disabled vehicle.”
I-24 East in Smyrna had to be shut down on Friday morning at about 1:45. It was re-opened 4-hours later at around 5:30 on Friday morning.
Multiple injuries were associated with the wreck, but names and details have yet to be released.
The investigation into the multi-car accident is continuing at this time and the Highway Patrol CIRT Team (Critical Incident Response Team) is assisting with that investigation.
