(MURFREESBORO)  The Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard renaming ceremony took place Saturday morning (9/18/2021) at the Patterson Community Center.  The first street marker was unveiled and Councilman Kirt Wade said all of the markers will be in place on October 13th. 

The Planning Commission voted May 19, 2021, to rename Mercury Boulevard to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. to recognize Dr. King’s contributions to racial equity and to reflect the City’s commitment to diversity.

City Councilmember Kirt Wade noted that the late Tommy Vaughn, who passed away at the start of the pandemic on January 8, 2020, shared his dream of working with the Murfreesboro Branch of the NAACP to fulfill his vision of remembering Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by having a street named in his honor...



The renaming of Mercury Boulevard to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Blvd. recognizes the national contributions of the slain civil rights leader in advocating racial equity through non-violence in the 1960s and reflects the commitment of the City to embracing diversity within the community.

Councilman Wade noted that the new street markers will be up on October 13, 2021.
