Residents may practice handgun safety and ride with a deputy during the free Sheriff’s Citizens Academy class beginning Tuesday, April 5.
Classes will be for 10 weeks on Tuesday nights from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. until June 14 at the Sheriff’s Office at 940 New Salem Highway in Murfreesboro, said Community Services Sgt. Gary Herron.

“The citizens in the class love the scenarios with the range,” Herron said. “Deputies will train with the residents and practice different shooting situations.”

Interactive classes allow the residents to hear presentations and demonstrations by different divisions with a chance for residents to ask questions.

Classes include:

• Learning about the Patrol Division and the Criminal Investigations Division.
• Taking a tour of the Adult Detention Center and Judicial Center.
• Shooting at the range.
• Listening to deputies talk about mental health calls and negotiations.
• Watching the K9s and Mounted Patrol horses.
• Studying SWAT operations.

People interested in taking the class may call Herron at 615-904-3019 or email him at gherron@rcsotn.org for an application.
