(Murfreesboro, Tenn.) Guns being stolen out of unlocked vehicles continues to be an issue… so far, about 16-guns have been stolen out of cars and trucks in Murfreesboro since March 1st. MPD Lieutenant Clayton Williams told WGNS those numbers could easily climb as we head into summer... The majority of car break-ins occur at night and involve culprits going from one vehicle to another, trying to find the cars, trucks or SUV’s that are unlocked.
As for tracking down stolen firearms, that’s not as easy as one would think. Thieves are not inclined to take stolen handguns to pawnshops, gun stores or even gun shows like they once did...

In nearby Nashville, the problem is growing exponentially. This year, 536 guns have been stolen from vehicles in Music City. In fact, more than 70% of all guns reported stolen this year in Nashville (762) were taken from vehicles. Last week alone, 26 guns were stolen from cars and trucks.
Going hand in hand with vehicle burglaries is vehicle theft. A review of last week’s stolen vehicle reports in Nashville shows that 65% of the automobiles taken (36 of 55) were easy targets because the keys were left inside or made available to thieves.
Just like guns taken from vehicles, these stolen autos are also routinely involved in criminal activities, including carjackings and robberies.
