MTSU Board of Trustees to hold June 14th Quarterly Meeting - Talk of a New Liberal Arts Building

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — The Middle Tennessee State University Board of Trustees will hold its quarterly meeting on Tuesday, June 14th. The meeting begins at 1 p.m. in the Miller Education Center, Second Floor Meeting Room (503 E. Bell St). 

One of the items to be discussed at the meeting is the proposal of a new 130-thousand-square-foot academic building. The board will discuss submitting a request for state funding from the Tennessee Higher Education Commission, which will forward their recommendation to the Governor of Tennessee.

According to documents the board of trustees will cover on June 14th, the proposed project is estimated to cost up to $99-million to construct, which includes administrative fees. At least 8% of the funding will have to come from MTSU and another $2.5 to $2.6-million will come from donations or gifts to the university.

The proposed Liberal Arts building is expected to include exhibit, research, classroom and office space. Some of the departments that will utilize the proposed building include History, Political Science and International Relations, Sociology and Anthropology, and Global Studies and Human Geography, as well as the Center for Historic Preservation.

Another big-ticket item that is on the Fiscal Year 2023/2024 Capital Disclosure List includes $59-million in renovations to the MTSU Murphy Center. Plans call for the addition of a new entry and lobby, renovated arena seating and the renovation of the basketball locker rooms and practice courts.

Over 70-MTSU employees are likely looking forward to the upcoming meeting, because 28-MTSU worker’s are being recommended for tenure and 49-names have been submitted to receive a promotion.

The agenda for June 14th further includes reports from board committees; approval of items including minutes; approval of tenure and promotion candidates; approval of appointment of chair of excellence; approval of degree under consideration; approval of policy revisions; capital outlay project submittal; capital disclosures; approval of tuition, fees, and housing rates; approval of compensation; and approval of operating budgets.
