Rutherford County, Tenn. — State Rep. Mike Sparks, R-Smyrna, State Rep. Charlie Baum, R-Murfreesboro, and State Sen. Dawn White, R-Murfreesboro, today announced state grants for the Smyrna Senior Center and the La Vergne Senior Center. Both centers will receive $8,000 to advance senior center projects in their communities.

The funds are part of $1 million appropriation approved by the Tennessee General Assembly and administered by the Tennessee Commission on Aging and Disability (TCAD) for senior citizen centers across the state.

“Senior centers provide important opportunities for our aging population to remain connected and active members of the community,” Sparks and Baum said in a joint statement. “These grants will help ensure that continues. We are grateful for the General Assembly’s support of these incredibly valuable organizations in Rutherford County.”

The appropriated funds are part of a $52.8 billion balanced budget passed by the 112th General Assembly in April.

“Senior Centers provide a safe place for our aging citizens to socialize with others,” said White. “It is important that we take care of our elderly, and I am pleased these grants from the state will aid in those efforts. I appreciate TCAD for their work administering these grants.”

TCAD awarded 125 grants in 89 counties through a competitive application process, said James Dunn, executive director for TCAD. The grants must be used to pay for operating, administrative, programing, and preventive maintenance costs. The funds will also allow many senior centers to accomplish capital projects for the upkeep and operations of their facilities and equipment.
