(MURFREESBORO) Three of the four right lanes and the shoulder of I-24 eastbound (toward Murfreesboro) were shutdown for almost an hour at 3:41 Monday afternoon (2/6/2023) due to a multi-vehicle crash at mile marker 74. This was during the start of the heavy afternoon interstate traffic, and several thousand persons were impacted.

The problem was made worse when trailer trucks and other vehicles attempted to drive down the right side emergency lane to exit onto I-840. Unfortunately, the majority of the crash was in the emergency lane. The emergency vehicles used that exact lane to get to the crash. Suddenly, impatient motorists who wanted to exit onto I-840, started driving down the eastbound emergency lane. Once they reached the crash, a gridlock condition resulted.

A Ford F-150 supercab pickup and an older model 4-door Subaru compact car were involved.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol worked the crash, along with the Rutherford County Sheriffs Department, Murfreesboro Fire-Rescue, Rutherford County Fire-Rescue and Rutherford County Emergency Medical Services.
